The Stars Over Mestea

The group travels to the Dancing Fish to find Iara. Gorgos is first to enter, and is in a fury. Grabbing the barmaid, he pins her against the wall by her neck: "What did they give you? Was it worth the price of a dead daughter?"

"What happened to Kallia? She's at home with my mother!"

"Who did you tell about her?"

"Lots of people!"

"You told me to keep it a secret!"

"It's different! I'm...proud of her!"

"I'm proud of her, too!" Gorgos lets Iara down and shows her the note.

"Does Leus know about her?"

"Maybe..."

Gorgos smacks her, hard. Megaman pulls him away. Snarling, Gorgos allows himself to be dragged away to the Far Traveller, to see if they can catch Leus. Damos and Cyrus go with them.

At the Far Traveller, a familiar figure is behind the counter: Xeneus, the former servant of Lord Myndas, is there. He's become the Far Traveller's baker, and the bread smells wonderful. Xeneus is happy that he had been dragged out of Myndas's home, and has not gone back. He finds the bar life much more stimulating and to his taste. Demos and Megaman purchase a loaf and sample it, finding it very tasty. Cyrus recommends Gorgos buy something for Iara, as a peace offering. Gorgos buys a sweet loaf to give to her.

Back to the Dancing Fish. Gorgos apologizes to Iara, offering her the bread. She is nursing a black eye, and berates him, not for hitting her, but for wasting time apologizing when he should be searching for his missing daughter. While Gorgos receives his scolding, an urchin hands Cyrus a note. He reads it and rushes out the door...only to return moments later to order a beer and think.

Gorgos, on his way out, bumps into Cyrus. Cyrus sends Gorgos around the building to look for the kidnapper. But Gorgos doubles back to follow Cyrus instead.

Cyrus sees a figure hiding in a dark alley. "Stop! Stop right there!" It's Leus. Catching up with Leus, Cyrus explains, "Gorgos is looking for his daughter." At that moment, Gorgos arrives; Leus runs away. Cyrus, sprinting after him, catches him, and Gorgos is lost in the maze of alleys. Leus tells Cyrus he needs gold to escape the city. They negotiate: gold in exchange for information where Kallia is confined.

Megaman and Damos wish to interrogate Senesh Haburta to see what he knows of the kidnapped girl. Lord Iphios agrees to let them do so, but says that they don't have much time. There are others who wish to imprison Haburta, and there is jurisdictional wrangling. His ultimate fate is unknown.

Haburta is under heavy guard in the dungeons, manacled to the wall. Damos holds a knife to his throat while Megaman interrogates him to prevent him from casting any spells. Haburta is arrogant even in defeat. When asked who else was in on the plan, he snorts. "Others? There are no others. Nobody else in this fly-blown town was smart enough to think of this plan." When pressed, Haburta admitted there were others, but he viewed them all as underlings and followers. With further questioning, he admitted that Lord Demios was part of the plot. At this, Damos had Lord Iphios listen in, and Haburta was made to repeat his statement. Haburta gave little other useful information: he knew nothing of the kidnap plot ("Why kidnap some girl? What good could that gain me?"), and there were no more Druas assassins to be found. The ancient bones were stolen to help him read the stars. As the interrogation proceeds, both Damos and Megaman grow convinced that Haburta will not be a prisoner for long. He is too confident of his power, and his power is such that bonds are unlikely to hold him without constant vigilance. In fact, there are signs at the end of his interrogation that he is preparing to cast spells. Damos considers that Haburta cannot be held safely, and it would be best if he were dead. Megaman catches his eye and the two men nod to each other. Megaman tells Haburta that he can die right there. Haburta laughs. Lord Iphios, listening at the door, pointedly turns his back. Megaman draws his knife; Haburta attempts to cast a spell; Megaman slits his throat. Lord Iphios is not sorry. "That solves the jurisdictional problem, at least." They depart the dungeons. On their way out, Megaman casts his own spell, and Haburta's unguarded body bursts into flames.

Gorgos returns to Iara at the Dancing Fish. He sends her home to find out when Kallia disappeared.

Cyrus decides to get cash to pay Leus. They search for Herrossos, a fence by the waterfront. They spot Gorgos as he leaves the Dancing Fish, causing Leus to panic, but they successfully dodge the guardsman. Finding Herasus, Cyrus shows him the smallest of the pieces looted from the astrologer's treasures, and cuts a deal to fence two pieces. He will not get much money for them because he needs the gold fast, but Cyrus is unconcerned. It will take some time; they will meet again later in the afternoon.

Damos and Megaman snoop around Lord Demios's estate. It's two stories tall with an attic and barred windows. Damos chucks a rock into the grounds to see how the guards respond, and the gratifying result is that they all rush toward the noise, leaving their posts unguarded for a few minutes. Damos decides infiltrating Lord Demios's estate is doable, but risky.

Gorgos returns to the barracks. He talks with Lt. Anto, who says he knew Pelo was working for Haburta. Gorgos finds no information to shed light on Kallia's disappearance.

While waiting for their agreed meeting time with Herasus, Cyrus and Leus go to Lord Elios X's house, bringing the good news that his ancestor's bones have been located and will soon be returned to the tomb. Cyrus returns to Lord Elios the jewelry he looted from Elios's possessions, saying it should be re-interred with the remains.

It is time to meet Herasus. Herasus has the cash for him, which Cyrus gives to Leus. Leus protests at the amount, but Cyrus is firm: "I never said how much gold I'd give you to find the girl. Here is gold. Or would you prefer to meet Gorgos again?" Leus sags. "She's in the Far Traveller, upstairs, with Pello." Cyrus takes Leus to meet the others at the Far Traveller. When Leus sees Gorgos, he flees, cursing Cyrus for his treachery. Megaman and Gorgos storm upstairs, while Damos runs around the building to be sure nobody escapes through the window.

Gorgos and Pello wrestle for Pello's knife, while Cyrus stabs Pello. Pello falls, and Kallia is rescued unhurt.
